Former Chelsea player William Gallas has expressed his surprise over the club’s recent acquisition of Filip Jorgensen for £20.7 million, bringing the total number of experienced goalkeepers at Chelsea to seven.
This summer, Chelsea signed seven new players for approximately £97 million, including Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Aston Villa’s Omari Kellyman. Notably, only Tosin Adarabioyo and Dewsbury-Hall are above the age of 22, reflecting a bold youth-focused strategy. Despite these additions, Gallas questioned the need for another goalkeeper. Chelsea’s current roster already features Robert Sanchez, Dorde Petrovic, Marcus Bettinelli, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Lucas Bergstrom, and Eddie Beach.
Chelsea’s spending habits under fire
Gallas criticized Chelsea’s transfer strategy, pointing out several costly acquisitions, such as Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez, who have not met expectations. Despite spending over £1 billion on new talent, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has not seen satisfactory returns on these investments. This has led to widespread speculation among fans and experts about the club’s transfer strategy. Gallas described the situation at Chelsea as a “huge mess,” a sentiment shared by many.
Adding to the confusion, Chelsea is on the verge of signing 20-year-old striker Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid for £30 million while planning to sell homegrown player Conor Gallagher to Atletico for £33.7 million. Gallas noted that the players being brought in are very young, which he sees as problematic. “The problem isn’t down to the players,” he said. “The problem is whoever is bringing them in. It’s the owner who is putting his hand into his pocket but others are giving him the information.”
Unnecessary goalkeeper acquisition
Gallas also criticized the decision to sign Danish goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, making him the seventh senior goalkeeper on Chelsea’s books. With established goalkeepers like Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, and Kepa Arrizabalaga already in the squad, Gallas found this move baffling. “What can I say about Chelsea signing another goalkeeper? Why are they doing it? What for? Why do they think they need another goalkeeper?” he asked, reflecting the confusion and frustration felt by many Chelsea supporters.
With the new season approaching, the impact of Chelsea’s transfer decisions on their on-field performance remains uncertain.
