With the conclusion of Euro 2024, Tottenham Hotspur is intensifying their efforts to acquire Conor Gallagher from Chelsea. Spurs are determined to sign the midfielder, having shown interest since the summer of 2023.
Gallagher’s performances during the tournament have only heightened his appeal, making him a priority for Tottenham as they aim to strengthen their squad. The ongoing financial issues at Chelsea, coupled with Gallagher’s contract situation, have created a window of opportunity for Spurs to make a move.
Spurs’ interest and financial constraints
Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Conor Gallagher has been ongoing, with Spurs eyeing him as a key addition to their squad. Manager Ange Postecoglou considers Gallagher a top target, but Tottenham’s approach has been cautious. The club was expected to act in June, capitalizing on Chelsea’s financial difficulties related to Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). However, no action was taken at that time.
As Gallagher has entered the final year of his contract, the urgency to secure him has increased. Chelsea’s current valuation for Gallagher stands at over £50 million, similar to the fee Manchester United paid for Mason Mount. However, Tottenham has set a cap of £40 million for the transfer, reflecting their reluctance to exceed this amount. This figure aligns with what Spurs paid for James Maddison from Leicester City in 2023.
Gallagher’s value and potential deal
Gallagher, who featured for England in Euro 2024, is now free to decide on his future. Despite Tottenham’s ongoing interest, Gallagher’s agents had initially preferred to avoid distractions from the tournament. Chelsea remains open to selling Gallagher if their price is met, but the midfielder is reportedly content to stay at Stamford Bridge and compete for his place under new manager Enzo Maresca. He has not ruled out the possibility of seeing out his contract and becoming a free agent in 2025.
Chelsea’s eagerness to avoid losing Gallagher for nothing next year could benefit Tottenham. If the Blues are forced to lower their demands to ensure a summer transfer, Spurs might find an opportunity to secure Gallagher at a more manageable price.
